Come hear the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra perform a program designed and conducted by Maestro Carmon DeLeone. Music for the Birds will feature excerpts from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, a few tunes by Maestro DeLeone, and even Harry Potter. Discover how composers use the many sounds of the orchestra to portray birds and the wonder of flight.

This concert provides an opportunity for young people to develop a lifelong relationship with music and the orchestra. As part of the symphonic curriculum, the IPO will provide trained docents to help prepare students for their concert experiences.

IPO Docents

An integral part of the Symphonic Youth Concert, our Docent Program involves trained volunteers who share their love for music and children, and visit classrooms to help prepare students for their concert experiences.

Docents lead students through listening lessons and activities featuring the music and composers from the upcoming concert. Those interested in receiving a docent visit may request one through the
concert order form (coming soon).

A docent will contact you to arrange a time for the presentation. Please tell the docent how many students are expected at the presentation. This will help the docent prepare materials for his or her talk.

Artists-in-the-Schools

We’ll visit your school with an Artist-in-the-School quintet. This program introduces students to the instrument families of the orchestra. These 45-minute wind, brass or string quintet performances consist of music with lively explanations, followed by a question and answer session. Prior to each visit, the Orchestra provides schools with study guide materials for students and teachers.

Mentorship

The Mentorship Program provides opportunities for aspiring musicians to work with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra's seasoned professionals on performance technique and musicianship. The Mentorship Program is custom designed for upper grade music students. and includes sessions taught by IPO professional musicians, which may culminate in a dress rehearsal with members of the Illinois Philharmonic and your band or orchestra students.
